Dermontti Dawson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers 44th overall in 1988. He quickly earned the nickname “Dirt” for his physical play and ability to grind defenders to the ground. He earned First-Team All-Pro honors in six consecutive seasons (1993 – 1998). He spent his entire 13-year career with the Steelers. In the history of the franchise, he ranks eighth all-time in games played (184). He was inducted into the Pittsburgh Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also an inaugural member of the Steelers Hall of Honor in 2017. While Dawson’s #63 jersey is not officially retired by the Steelers, the organization has not reissued it since his retirement in 2000.
